Lamas (or Lammos) comes from Loaf-Mass. It is also known as Lughnasad or Lughnasadha or Lugnasadha (all of which are basically pronounced /loo-nah-sah/), from the name of the sun god Lugh. It was considered the beginning of autumn by the ancients, who celebrated it with a festival and strength and endurance competition among the young men. Sacrifices of bread and grains were made to the gods of the harvest in thanks for what had come to pass, in hopes of a bountiful second harvest later in the fall. For us, Lamas marks the transformation between growth and sustenance.
